The University of Sargodha (UoS) obeserved the National Minorities Day, highlighting the rights and contributions of minority communities and stressing the importance of religious harmony, tolerance, mutual respect and national unity.
Organised by the Riaz Shad Co-Curricular Forum, the ceremony was attended by Christian religious leader Father Mukhtar Alam, Chairman Department of Islamic Studies Prof. Dr. Feroz ud Din Shah, Director Riaz Shad Co-Curricular Forum Dr. Muhammad Munir, Assistant Registrar Daim Iqbal, besides students, faculty members and staff.
Father Mukhtar Alam said all religions preached peace, love and humanity. He said Pakistan was home to all its citizens and minority communities had always stood by the country during difficult times, adding that tolerance, mutual respect and religious harmony were essential for strengthening national unity.
Prof. Dr. Feroz ud Din Shah said Islam promoted equality, justice and protection of minority rights. He said all human beings were descendants of Adam (AS) and stressed that the protection of the lives, property, dignity, places of worship and religious freedom of minorities was an essential responsibility of a just society.
Dr. Muhammad Munir said the contribution of minority communities to Pakistan’s development has been invaluable. He said members of minority communities had rendered valuable services in different fields and deserved equal opportunities, respect and participation in the country’s development.
The speakers said observance of National Minorities Day aimed to highlight the rights and contributions of minority communities and promote tolerance and mutual respect in society. They stressed the need to advance Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s principles of equality, religious freedom and tolerance, saying Pakistan’s progress and stability depended on the collective efforts of all its citizens.
