The Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) at the University of Sargodha (UoS) organized one-day training workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), aimed at educating faculty members and postgraduate students on patents, copyrights, trademarks, geographic indications and to understand all legal process of IP registration in Pakistan and abroad.
The event was graced by Chairman of the Intellectual Property Organization & Ambassador (R) Farukh Amil as the Keynote Speaker and Chief Guest, while Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, Vice Chancellor of UOS, attended as the Guest of Honor.
In his address, Farukh Amil emphasized the crucial role of research and product development in driving economic growth and encouraged students to become innovators, focusing on startups that support agriculture, given Pakistan's status as an agricultural hub.
Farukh Amil also drew inspiration from the Japanese mindset, highlighting their success in working on ideas and developing their country. He urged students to register their intellectual property with the IPO Pakistan, stressing the importance of protecting their creative work.
Furthermore, He appreciated UoS's initiatives and commitment to intellectual property (IP) awareness, emphasizing the importance of universities playing an active role in fostering innovation and protecting research-driven advancements.
Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas shared that the university has established a world-class incubation center, supported startups and provided facilities to register intellectual property rights. Notably, the university has successfully registered 36 patents within a remarkable span of just one year.
The event host and Director ORIC-UoS, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Raza Bilal highlighted the university's achievements in intellectual property by presenting key statistics and success stories from the past two years.
The workshop featured an engaging session by Deputy Director IPO, Ghulam Mujtaba, who provided a detailed overview of patents, industrial designs, copyrights, and the step-by-step process for securing intellectual property rights, including application procedures, processing timelines, and key benefits.
Additionally, Asma Khattak, Director of Intellectual Property, delivered a comprehensive briefing on trademarks and geographical indications (GI), highlighting their significance in branding and commercialization.
The workshop attracted a large number of faculty members and students from various departments, reflecting keen interest in intellectual property and its role in research, innovation, and economic development.
