2002 Established as Department of “Oriental Languages”, Comprising on Arabic, Punjabi and Persian. 2013 Gained its individual identity upon establishment of “Department of Punjabi” as a full-fledged department . 2017 Merged with Urdu and Persian under the name of “Department of Urdu and Oriental Languages” . 2022 Gained its present status “Department of Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture”
The Department is committed to promote study of Punjabi language, literature, culture, and history with the goal of supporting greater understanding and use of Punjabi as a major world language. As a region Punjab holds a glorious past as the cradle of Indus Civilisation, and later acting as a gateway to Indian Gangetic plains for the Middle Eastern traders, kings, explorers, and travellers. Its importance within the subcontinent has been underlined both by a turbulent history and contemporary events.
