Overview

At the Department of Zoology, University of Sargodha, curiosity is transformed into knowledge, ideas into discoveries, and scientific understanding into solutions that matter. By bringing together academic excellence, innovative research, practical learning, and emerging biological sciences, the department provides an inspiring environment where future scientists, researchers, educators, and professionals are prepared to explore new possibilities and make meaningful contributions to society. OUR LEGACY — ROOTED IN KNOWLEDGE, DRIVEN BY DISCOVERY Established in 2007 as Biological Sciences and subsequently developed into the Department of Zoology in 2013, the department has evolved into a dynamic center of teaching, learning, and scientific inquiry.Built upon a commitment to academic excellence and research advancement, the department continues to promote scientific curiosity, critical thinking, innovation, and environmental responsibility. Its academic journey reflects a vision of preparing graduates who are not only knowledgeable in biological sciences but also capable of applying their expertise to emerging challenges in health, food security, biodiversity, and sustainable development. LEARNING WITHOUT LIMITS — EXPLORE THE SCIENCE OF LIFE Zoology is more than the study of animals. It is the science of understanding life, addressing global challenges, and discovering possibilities for a better future. Our academic and research activities integrate classical zoological knowledge with contemporary biological sciences, offering students exposure to a diverse range of disciplines, including Fisheries and Aquaculture, Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation, Parasitology, Genetics, Microbiology, Toxicology, Reproductive Physiology, Animal Behaviour, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Developmental Biology, Immunology, and Environmental Biology. Through a combination of conceptual learning, laboratory investigations, field-based experiences, and research-oriented activities, students are encouraged to look beyond textbooks, challenge conventional thinking, and develop the confidence to investigate real-world scientific questions. Whether exploring genetic diversity, understanding animal behaviour, investigating environmental pollutants, studying disease-causing organisms, or examining the biological processes that sustain life, students are introduced to the exciting possibilities offered by modern zoological sciences. WHERE SCIENCE COMES ALIVE — EXPERIENCE, EXPERIMENT, EXPLORE Great discoveries begin with curiosity, but they are shaped through experimentation, observation, and innovation. Practical learning and research are integral to the academic environment of the department. Its laboratory facilities and research areas encompass Wildlife and Molecular Ecology, Reproductive Biology and Histopathology, Toxicology, Hematology and Vascular Biology, Microbiology, and other specialized biological investigations. These facilities support the development of essential scientific competencies, including experimental design, laboratory techniques, biological analysis, scientific observation, data interpretation, and research communication. By connecting theoretical knowledge with practical scientific experiences, students are encouraged to develop analytical thinking, technical confidence, problem-solving abilities, and an investigative mindset essential for advanced studies and professional careers. RESEARCH THAT MATTERS — DISCOVERIES WITH REAL-WORLD IMPACT Science becomes truly powerful when discoveries move beyond laboratories and contribute to solving real-world problems. The department promotes a research culture focused on scientific advancement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and addressing challenges relevant to society and the environment. Faculty research activities span diverse areas, including fisheries and aquatic biology, biodiversity conservation, parasitology, biological pest control, environmental toxicology, drinking-water quality, reproductive biology, molecular sciences, and vascular health. Research projects supported by university and national funding agencies have contributed to scientific investigation and knowledge development across these disciplines. Students are encouraged to develop a research-oriented mindset, explore emerging scientific questions, engage with contemporary methodologies, and recognize the potential of scientific innovation in improving environmental quality, supporting sustainable resource management, advancing biological understanding, and contributing to human and animal well-being. BEYOND BOUNDARIES — CONNECTING KNOWLEDGE, PEOPLE, AND POSSIBILITIES Scientific progress knows no boundaries, and meaningful learning extends far beyond the classroom. The department recognizes the importance of academic collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional engagement in developing globally aware and scientifically competent graduates. Its academic history includes collaborative activities involving Fırat University, Türkiye; a medical university in Austria; and Government College University Lahore. Through scientific conferences, academic seminars, research workshops, professional training, and environmental awareness activities, opportunities have been created for intellectual exchange, skill development, and exposure to emerging scientific perspectives. The organization of the International Conference on Emerging Trends in Zoology and participation in initiatives such as WWF eco-internships reflect the department's commitment to connecting academic learning with broader scientific and environmental engagement. Looking ahead, the department aspires to strengthen national and international partnerships, encourage collaborative research, and expand opportunities for students and faculty to engage with the wider scientific community. YOUR PASSION. YOUR POTENTIAL. YOUR FUTURE. A degree in Zoology is not simply an academic qualification; it can be the beginning of a journey filled with discovery, opportunity, and purpose. The multidisciplinary nature of zoological sciences opens pathways to diverse professional and academic opportunities. Graduates may pursue careers in scientific research, higher education, fisheries and aquaculture, wildlife conservation, environmental management, laboratory sciences, biotechnology-related fields, education, and public-sector organizations, subject to relevant qualifications and professional requirements. The department takes pride in its graduates who have established careers in education, fisheries, civil services, and other professional sectors. Their achievements demonstrate the value of scientific knowledge, analytical competence, professional dedication, and lifelong learning. Beyond academic qualifications, the department seeks to develop graduates who are intellectually curious, scientifically competent, ethically responsible, adaptable, and prepared to contribute to an increasingly knowledge-driven world. SHAPING TOMORROW — OUR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE The future of biological sciences belongs to those who are willing to question, explore, innovate, and discover. With a forward-looking vision, the department remains committed to strengthening its academic programs, modernizing laboratory infrastructure, promoting interdisciplinary research, encouraging technological innovation, and expanding collaborative opportunities. Greater emphasis is envisioned on student-centered learning, research excellence, practical skill development, scientific entrepreneurship, and engagement with emerging areas of biological sciences. Through continued investment in knowledge, talent, research, and innovation, the department aspires to create an academic environment where scientific potential is recognized, creativity is encouraged, and discoveries are translated into meaningful contributions toward sustainable development and societal well-being.
