Established in 2009, the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Sargodha advances the critical and systematic study of society, social institutions, human behaviour, crime, and justice. Integrating sociological theory with empirical inquiry and criminological perspectives, it seeks to deepen understanding of social processes and contribute to informed responses to contemporary challenges. The Department offers five academic programmes: BS Sociology, BS Criminology, BS Sociology (5th Semester Intake), M.Phil. Sociology, and PhD Sociology. It serves approximately 974 students, with nine regular faculty members and around 20 visiting faculty members, including professionals from diverse sectors. Its community of approximately 2,276 alumni contributes to education, research, public service, criminal justice, and development in Pakistan and abroad. Teaching combines classical and contemporary social theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Through critical discussion, fieldwork, research projects, and experiential learning, students develop sociological imagination, analytical reasoning, methodological competence, ethical judgement, and sensitivity to social and cultural diversity. This approach prepares graduates to investigate social realities independently and engage responsibly in professional and civic life. The Department encourages theoretically informed and empirically grounded research into social inequality, cultural change, gender, governance, deviance, crime, criminal justice, and development. It values methodological rigour, critical reflection, and research that connects local experiences with broader social processes. By fostering scholarly inquiry and policy-relevant analysis, it aims to contribute to disciplinary debates and evidence-informed decision-making. Community engagement is an integral dimension of its academic outlook. Collaboration with public institutions, criminal justice agencies, civil society organizations, and development partners creates opportunities for field-based learning, knowledge exchange, and dialogue between research and practice. Grounded in academic integrity, intellectual openness, and social responsibility, the Department seeks to educate thoughtful graduates, nurture emerging researchers, and advance sociological and criminological knowledge in the service of inclusive, just, and peaceful societies. Its academic orientation reflects the Faculty's commitment to transformative education and societal engagement.
