Overview

Welcome to the Department of Horticulture, University College of Agriculture, University of Sargodha, Sargodha, Pakistan. As a subject Horticulture has been part of the UOS curriculum since 2005. In 2012 Horticulture became a separate department. The department has offered B.Sc (Hons.), M.Sc (Hons) and PhD degrees since 2007, 20009 and 2013 respectively. The Department’s mission is to train our students for horticulture-associated careers in science and business. This includes making novelties in the field of horticultural science; improving the quality and quantity of horticultural commodities; and strengthening the horticultural sector of Pakistan and particularly the citrus industry of Sargodha region. Department is pioneer in developing certified and disease free citrus nursery in Sargodha region. This nursery is providing certified and disease free nursery of seedless varieties to the citrus growers at very economical price. The certified citrus bud-wood block at Department of Horticulture is also significant attraction for the students, researchers, national and international visitors. The best fruit publication award by American Society of Horticultural Science and Significant Innovation Award by Pakistan Science Foundation are also on the credit of departmental. Department have 06 the most talented and highly qualified faculty. Our faculty members seize a diversified expertise in fruits/pomology, vegetables, viticulture, floriculture, nursery crops, postharvest, mushroom cultivation, tissue culture and landscape design and ecology. Faculty members exercise their specialties in their research, teaching and outreach programs. Horticulture at UOS is among the exceptionally top ranked horticulture departments throughout the country. Department of horticulture offers four year curriculum leading to Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture. In this program (B.Sc. Hons) we have annual intake of 35 students. Our undergraduate and graduate curriculum is continuously reviewed and evaluated to introduce new concepts, practices, and technologies, and to ensure that the curriculum is enriched with practical and hands-on experiences and internships to help students to develop problem solving skills in management, design, science, and technology. Our graduate program comprised of two-year M.Sc. (Hons) and three-years PhD degrees. Currently, 1500 students are enrolled in our graduate program and every year intake is 350 students. Research is gravely important to improve the horticulture sector; therefore the students of our graduate degrees are working on very fundamental, disciplinary, applied and problem-oriented projects. Horticulture faculty members are extensively engaged with projects related to the burning issues of the horticulture sector. All these investigations are supported by nationally-competitive grants from federal and provincial agencies. Department also research collaboration with prestigious foreign institutions like Cornell University, USA, University of Florida, USA and Adam Harper University, UK. Department aims that there should be very close and efficacious relationship between horticultural industry/stakeholders and horticulture department UOS, therefore our faculty members are providing on farm and free of cost consultancy and advisory services to horticultural growers with special focus on citrus growers. Department also conducts various short courses such nursery management, kitchen gardening, cult flower arrangement, mushroom cultivation, lawn management etc for urban and rural community. Sargodha is known as mini California due to the citrus production of unique taste and quality and scientist at department of horticulture, UOS working day a night to augment the recognition of Sargodha region by uplifting the quality of our citrus.
